Thanks to a day with my friend Cheryl Davis, I have been having such fun wire wrapping the crystals that I got on our crystal dig at Mt Ida. AR.

This is just a few samples of the fun.

So far, I have done 20 wraps. So maybe more pictures to come.

They are simple and wild designs that are inspired by the stone itself.

I took pictures years ago and have painted many versions of it in watercolor and pastel through the years. The farm has sold and the big sycamores are gone now. Glad I still have the photos.

Here is the first in my summer series of Oil Landscapes. My goal is to paint a minimum of ten landscapes and then ten still life paintings. I know ten is not a big goal. So I should be very happy with my accomplishment when I actually see that I have painted many more.

This may seem like I am venturing off in a new direction for many of you. For the past 10 years, I have shown mostly abstract watermedia. But oil and pastel are really my roots and I am yearning to return to those roots.

What I hope to show myself as well as all of you, is a growth in composition, value and color through a dedicated study this summer. Wow, now I am making a big commitment to live up too.

Judging Apples and Oranges

I had the pleasure and honor of judging an art exhibit this morning. It is always a challenge to judge art. But this exhibit was a extra challenge.
The exhibit was a group of talented artists of various mediums, including wood turning, jewelry, pottery, stone sculpture, watercolor, and oil paintings. There were 13 artists set up with booths of their work for an exhibition and sale. Each artist chose one work that would be judged for 4 awards, Best of Show, First, Second, and Third. Now my challenge was to structure my criteria to judge apples to oranges, so to speak. I came up with a point system. I created my list of criteria categories with :
1. WOW factor..........meaning catching my eye, bringing me in and making me want to take a closer look.
2. Technique/Skill.............how well did the pieces demonstrate mastery of the medium.
3. Creativity/Originality..............I was looking for thought provoking, or handled in a new or unusual way,
or different approach than the common.
4. Design....................good composition and design principles.

Each category would get points judged from 1 to 5 with 5 being perfection.
It worked very well for me and I felt like I was able to judge each piece on its on merits and not against each other.
It is always hard to only give a few awards when there are so many good pieces in a show. This was a very small show and I must say that they all get a "job well done" from me.

Journaling the Journey of Discovery

As I begin to collect my journals last night, I planned out the journals I would begin to work with. I knew I wanted one titled "Gratitude", one for " flow writing" (which would be message from my higher self and my guides), and one for "Art Notes", and one for "Dreams". I am sure there will be more to come.
With this new plan for writing, it seemed somehow easier to begin writing. In the past it all seemed to jumble up into just wild unclear thoughts with lots of starts and no finishes.
I am also visualizing getting creative and decorating these journals, but that will come later. Getting down to writing is the important thing.
I am sharing with you this journal entry from last night. I know it was a clear message for me and my questions.
I thought that many of you would also make sense with the message. So if it helps you, I am so glad to share with you.
"Journaling is one your many visions of yourself. Some are true to who you are and some are illusions of who you want to appear. As you begin to search within and ask your heart what it wants in order to fulfill what you came to earth to be, you will see more clearly and enjoy the true desires of your heart.
Do not feel as a failure for those that you can't achieve. Put your energy in the things that allow your heart to sing and your light to shine to the world. Begin your journal and see what desires come forth that you have yet to dream. Listen in silence and without judgement. Be willing to accept what gifts you have been blessed with. Writing is a natural ability for you and one talent that your should have faith in and share. You think you have nothing to say but the truth of the writing is that you have much to discover through your writing."

Here is a website about journaling. I got some great ideas and inspiration from Aisling's Personal Art Journals. So I wanted to share it with all of you who might be interested in creating exciting journals for your thoughts, creative ideas or just for getting at all that stuff that swims around in your head.
I now have a cleared idea of how to utilize that collection of pretty, yet empty journals on my book shelf.

Would love to hear some of your ideas on journaling. When do you write? Why do you write? and do you share any of it or keep some secret?

How I started my art journals
Excerpt:
Generally, I have a couple of journals going. From 1999 - 2001, when I was approaching my divorce, I kept an angry one that no one will ever see. It's unattractive, but it kept me from venting too inappropriately sometimes. Pain and rage were scribbled on its pages. I was processing a lot of anguish.

If I see a time in my life that is unique or compartmentalized--a journey, or time alone, or a very intense teaching schedule or something like that--I'll create a journal just for that theme alone.

Then there's my everyday journal. It's at hand for my random thoughts, sketches, bits of paper & receipts, and collages. Sometimes it has a theme, but usually it's just my everyday journal. The theme may seem obvious later.

I hope Mother’s Day was a beautiful event for each of you.

This is one of my new small oil studies. I am planning to post more. I wish I could say that I am going to be doing a daily painting, but I know that is not happening at this time.

I am setting my goals for this year. (a little late, but second quarter goals are good too)

Here is my quick list:

1. Paint a portrait of each of my grandchildren.

2. Make drawing a daily event.

3. Learn how to take great digital photos of my oil paintings.

4. Visit museums and galleries once a month.

I will be judging another art show next weekend. I am so pleased to have been asked and looking forward to some inspiring art. More about that later.

I have not posted a blog entry for a while. Have you missed me? I hope you have. I will be back to posting about painting very soon. We sold our place in November and found this great new place. We are in a beautiful setting, surrounded by nature and great neighbors.

Here are a few pictures of our new house and my new studio. We have been remodeling since we moved in in December. And it looks as though I will be still painting over old wallpaper all summer. Or maybe I will get brave enough to strip it and start with fresh texture. Any offers of help out there?

I will post more pictures of the interior when I am finished.

Sometimes paintings like dreams come and you don't know where they came from. Beginning with three arbitrary colors, choosing colors that "felt good to me at the time" and some energetic marks with the brush. The rest of the process is to respond to what is happening on the canvas. This abstract insisted on being a landscape. I titled it Funscape because it has a feeling of joy, and exploration. Maybe it comes from our road trip west a couple of months ago.

Iris has been a favorite flower of mine to paint. This is my stylized and abstract version of the lily and the iris. The fleur de lis is a stylized lily or iris that is used as a decorative design or symbol. It's origins are French, fleur means flower, and lis means lily.

So here it is, finished. And now I am happy with it. It still has some of the happy color, but holds together with some structure and interesting shapes and forms. It was truly inspired by our visit to Sedona, AZ earlier this month. It just needed to rest over night, so I could see it with a fresh eye this morning.

This painting may be finished and it may get a rework, I haven't decided. I love the colors, but it seems to lack a strong enough structure of lights and darks. I will just let it sit around the studio for awhile and see if it asks for new passages.

I worked on a very textured canvas. One I had painted over a painting that I was not happy with. In the texture I used a combination of liquid gesso and matte medium. It gave me a very different surface to work on than I am used to. I loved experimenting like this. But sometimes it's a winner and sometimes you wonder "what was I thinking?".

Time will tell the fate of this piece. I'll let you know.

This is a watercolor that was painted a couple of years back. But I thought I would post it, since I am doing some more figurative work now. I wasn't using as much acrylic and opaque passages then. But I do love the feeling in the painting. The inspiration for this one was a photo from a New Year's eve country and western dance.

On this painting, I started with a heavily textured canvas. Working first with thin layers and glazes of fluid acrylics, I used the underlying texture and also created new textures. Then I began to mix paint with gesso and paint more directly with opaque colors and changes of value. The painting gives me a strong feeling of rain of a urban rooftop.

Today's painting was an exercise in using two complimentary colors, blue and orange. I also have been wanting to incorporate a figure into my abstract shapes using patterns and textures. I am pleased with the way this one looks and plan to paint a series of figures in abstract.

Finished Clay Sculpture of Mack, Our Black Lab

I finished the sculpture, quite a few months ago. It has been sitting on the drying shelf waiting to be fired. This past week I finished the patina and I am very happy with the way he looks. I worked on it from life. I have a hard time with photos of him, so he just lay around in the studio while I worked and I would go over and feel his head and nose and talk to him to get him to look at me. I think he would like for me to sculpt him again. He really enjoys hanging out in the studio.

This is a watermedia on paper 22x30 that I started at a demo. I finally got it back out this week and had a lot of fun with it. It took me a while of letting it just set around before I saw how I wanted to finish it. I think I will call it Pear Relish. I am always so fascinated by the reasons and ways that pears are such a common subject of paintings. So this is my way to explore that fascination.
I took this photo from my cell phone and emailed it to myself. But I think it is pretty true to the work. I will photograph it again before I put it up on my website.

A Day at Old Town Spring, Texas

It was great weather for our visit to Old Town Spring. If fact we spent two afternoons there exploring the quaint shops and the historic buildings. There were lots of small artist studios and galleries, and shops of just about any kind. We are told that the weekends are really hopping and lots of fun with music and festivals. I think it would be a great place to have a studio. But that would be a long commute for me. HaHa
Here are a few pictures from the trip. We took time to set in the shade and sketch for a while. We found the best place to have a big scoop of ice cream in a coconut coated waffle cone. Actually that was repeated both days. Thank goodess we did a lot of walking!
We missed a few places like the candle shop and the glass shop. But there was so much to see. Maybe next time.

Thursday afternoon was a beautiful and warm day here in East Texas. And there was a great turn out at the Gallery Main Street opening.

The artwork on the invitation is my entry that received "Best Of Show" for the exhibit.

I have my car packed and ready to deliver 36 works of art to Breckenridge Art Center in Breckenridge Texas. The opening reception will be Sunday February 28 and the show will hang through April 24.

Artist that Cheat

A couple of my art friends and I had a discussion today that brought up some issues about artist that don't realize they are cheating.
And by cheating I really mean they are missing some of the best things about becoming an artist. I know there is a very broad definition of art and being an artist. And I don't have any intention of getting into that here.
Lately it has come up quite often about artist that enter competitions and sell their work that they have copied from others published photographs. And the second issue has been the use of a projector to copy the photos onto the canvas or paper.   It has come to my attention that this is done by a lot of artist in the interest of time and getting the prospective correct, etc.
I am sure that many of you are writing your comments to defend the use of both photos and projectors. I agree that there is certainly a time and place in preparing your art for the use of both of these tools. I have done both. I use photos as reference for both portrait and landscape. I have used a projector for enlarging and placement. They are both great tools. I am not saying the use of them is cheating. (but to what extent they are used as a crutch instead of a tool.)

I recently went to see a watercolor show at a museum. It was one of the area's most active watercolor society. Of all the work, there was only two or three that seemed to be painted from the heart and soul of the artist. All the others had been "drawn" precisely with even the small little circles of highlights and shadows. Shapes that always give away the fact that the drawing was projected. And then carefully staying within the lines with the proper color. Crisp and clean. Now this is my opinion (it's my blog and I can do that), but it just seemed to miss the connection of artist and subject. And therefore it missed a connection with me the viewer.
Drawing from life gives the artist a connection with the subject that can not be duplicated in working from a photograph. I had rather see a drawing that is a little off, but with great feeling and expression. It allows me to experience more of the artist as well as the subject.
When using a photograph that was taken by someone else, you may think you are relating to the emotion or expression, but you are really only relating to the photographer's conception of the subject.
Get your own conception and it will tell so much more. Don't copy because it was beautiful or touching and you wanted to paint it. Let it stand as the art it is and create your own. You will be greatly rewarded when you do.   Draw often from life, take a sketch book with you instead of a camera. Use the camera to take images of all those wonderful paintings that will come from observing the world in living color around you.

Here are a couple of articles about the subject of plagiarism in art. I just hope I can encourage young artist to not "cheat" themselves.

Note: If you are going to copy, at least give credit to the original artist or photographer by signing "after name" and then your signature.

Am I plagiarizing?

Yesterday Isabel Belfort, email , wrote: "I'm trying to make paintings that use the works of dead artists. The paintings do not look like the originals. For instance I change the position of the person and alter the dress and change the face--but I follow the same line. Would this still be considered plagiarism? I sell them inexpensively—mostly to friends. My dream is to become a well-known artist. I took some classes but have been mostly my own teacher. Can you advise me?"

Thanks Isabel. What you're doing is called "appropriation." It's one of the least offensive of the copying arts. Outright plagiarism and counterfeiting can get you into the slammer--but you should be free for a while yet--providing you don't wander into exactly copying some dude, dead or alive. Legally, your painting needs to be 10% different from that which you are imitating. That's hard to quantify but you should keep it in mind.

You might also ask yourself why you need to lean on dead masters. With all the great reference that we can get ourselves, all the stuff yet to be made, and all the pride you can take in a personal vision--there's plenty left to play with. Your urge to replicate may come from a natural reverence for the works of perceived "stars." You might give some thought to being your own star.

While some might consider it an "homage," appropriation of style or subject can have the effect of banalizing and trivializing existing work. Over-appropriation and market-glutting cycles regularly attack wildlife, native American, faux-primitive, and other art genres. The path that leads to a unique vision is uphill and rocky, but it's the stellar route to the dream of becoming "well-known."

There are exceptions. A few years ago I was on a jury when a piece was chosen and then a juror pointed out that it was a knockoff of a demo in American Artist magazine. After a discussion the choice was upheld--the majority of jurors agreed that "we all use each other's stuff anyway." The excellent copy came in for a $25,000 prize and I was disgusted. I'm not sure of the best advice I've ever given, but this comes close: "Do something that others will have the desire to plagiarize--but will find it difficult to do when they try."

Esoterica: Louis Vuitton's Murakami bag costs in the art-stratospheric range of $1500--generating about 300 million in sales last year. The Chinese knockoffs, practically identical, cost about $35 and sell to a crowd that still needs to look good but never pays the big prices. Louis Vuitton will spend over ten million dollars this year retaining lawyers and scouts to fight "brand devaluation by overexposure." Two questions: "Is a bag art?" and "Who's running the better racket--Louis or the Chinese?"

The top image (A Bucket of Wildflowers) is painted with a new and fresh supply of Holbein watercolors. The paper is my favorite Fabriano Artisco 300lb. The poppies is fluid acrylic on the same paper. And the Yellow Flowers is a combination of watercolor and a little acrylic to finish, and same paper.

Criteria for Judging an Art Show for Awards

Over the past few months, I have received the honor of being asked to judge a few art shows. Along with this honor comes a lot of hard work, and difficult decisions. Setting aside personal taste of style and medium is really not that difficult as it may seem. The difficult task sometimes comes down to being able to set criteria that works within all mediums, styles, and skill levels. Art clubs and organizations all seem to have their own unique way of setting up categories. With this in mind, I have developed a list of criteria checklist for my judging. I don't use a point system, although that might develop for me later.

Impact
I first walk through and put a dot or mark by each piece that grabs my attention for any
reason. I am looking for an overall impact, whether by color, shape, subject, or anything that really "speaks" to me. This is my first walk through, and I don't spend time to think, just react to what I see.

Creativity and Originality
I lump these together, because it is hard to define them separately. Does the work, have a unique voice or interpretation , even if about a common subject? Does it evoke an emotion or reaction?

Composition and Design
The use of line, color, texture, shape, form, direction, space and perspective within the picture plane.

Color and Value
Is there dominance, variety, repetition, unity, balance, contrast?
I am actually looking for these in all the elements of design.

Movement
Is my interest and my eye lead with a natural flow to points of interest?

Skill and Control of Medium

Mocking Bird Nest

Birdnests have been the subject lately for demos and classes I have taught recently. As you have seen in a previous blog, I used the birdnest to demo how I use the newer open/interactive acrylics.
I have always loved to find birdnests and I am fascinated with the skills of our little feathered friends. We have a bluebird box by our patio and a family of bluebirds grow up there each summer, wrens have made their nest in my planters and even in our chimaneya on the patio. The yard is filled with all kinds of birds and a few of them I can identify. This is not a literal rendering of a mocking bird nest, but it reminds me of one.
Rarely do I have a vision in my mind of how the finished painting will be, but this one was an exception. The image of it has been floating around in my mind for about two weeks now. This morning I decided that I must get in down on canvas before it left me. I was thinking large and a very vertical format.
I didn't have a large canvas or panel, but I did have rolls of primed canvas. I decided the best way to begin would be cut my canvas a little larger than I thought I needed. So I cut it about 30" x 38", thinking I would tape or clip it to a board for support. Or another option was to tape or staple it to the wall. I ended up finding a older painting that was 24 x 36. So even though I was thinking larger, I clipped the fresh canvas around it. Mike will be making a trip to the hardware store for me before I finish this one.
Here is a little peek of the work. This is a first lay in of color and textures, it is shaping up nice for me. I still have more layers to add. I will post the finished painting whenever it is complete.

Motivation, Online Marketing, and Exhibiting Your Art

I wanted to share with you, what I have been enjoying listening to while I work in the studio.
Some people like to listen to their favorite genre of music, ( and I do too, sometimes). But I really find that listening to motivational cd's is a way to pump me up. I think you will really love these podcasts. I love to listen while I paint or work around in the studio with other chores. The 1st cd has 15 podcast, the 2nd has 11, and the 3rd has 11. With topics such as emerging from a slump to unifying your emarket.

You may be familiar with Alyson Stanfield's book I'd Rather Be in the Studio! The Artist's No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion is the most comprehensive self-promotion advice out there for artists. And not only is it packed with information, she also shows artists of all kinds how to implement each action step. I love the book, and I have had my copy since it first came out. It was with the advice Alyson shares that I began blogging, joined twitter and facebook and began to meet so many artist from around the world. I started blogging almost a year ago. It has taken me awhile to pick up the habit and confidence. It is becoming more and more a natural for me. I recommend it to all of you, even if you think, as I did, "but I have nothing to say". There are great personal and business rewards in it. Try it and have fun!

This class will focus on value studies, color mixing and painting method. This is an ongoing class with lessons presented in eight-week sessions. Students will learn to see the relationships of forms and colors, creating a compelling composition. In this class you will learn to use basic shape and form, how to add color nuances to enhance harmony in the painting. This class will include discussion and demonstration, with step-by-step explanations of "how and why" when approaching still life and landscape painting.

Here's a clip from a demo I gave at the Mineola League of the Arts, painters guild on Monday Aug 24.
For this demo, I am using both the Golden Open Acrylics and Chroma Interactive Acrylics on a stretched canvas.
There will be a sampler day of classes at the league on Monday, August 31 and I will be teaching the students that have signed up for my class how to paint a bird nest.

Summer Series
The summer has been filled with a busy schedule and not much time for travel. So I created a journey of my own, right at the easel. Using my own symbols and colors, I painted a series of paintings that represent to me, different countries and cultures. Here are a few of them for you to see. Also in the series is Mexico, Japan, and Greece. Mary at the Winnsboro Gallery has two of them available, Japan, and China. 23rd World Wide SketchCrawl July 11

SketchCrawl a World Wide event: having people from different corners of the world join in a day of sketching and journaling and then, thanks to the Internet, having everyone share the results on an online forum.
I went on my first official sketchcrawl , and I am excited to say that I scheduled to do it again in August 8. We have gone out and found people, nature, and day to day life to sketch. The official world wide is posted on the internet, usually about every three months. But a group of artist in the Tyler area has formed and plan to go each month. We will post our sketches on the internet site during the official sketchcrawl. It should be fun as well as a great way to keep the drawing habit sharpened. Please come join in the fun if you get a chance. Just let me know you are interested and will keep you updated as each event gets nearer.

I was invited to judge an art show at the Henderson County Art League, in Athens, Texas. There was a variety of artist from beginners to professional. Congratulations to all of you, it was an impressive show.

23rd World Wide Sketch Crawl

Here are some of my sketches from yesterdays sketch crawl in Tyler, Texas. We had a new group of artist from the east Texas area. We met in Tyler for the day and went out to see what we could find to sketch. We had a very hot day in Texas. The morning was spent at the zoo, but man was it HOT. So we found a nice cool place to sit and have lunch and a large ice tea. We then spent the rest of the afternoon, siping on a nice drink and sketches those around us. It was great fun and I met some new artist friends in the area.

Top Ten Ways I Nourish My Creative Spirit.

Here are my top ten ways I nourish my creative spirit:
1. setting aside time to be alone in the studio, this is crucial to me, I some time call it idle time. Time to put aside deadlines, and to do list and just play, or read, or meditate.
2. visiting with other artists, enjoying a long afternoon lunch, or maybe in their studio to see what they are working on.
3. trips to museums, galleries, and exhibitions, preferably with other artist or alone, not with family ( I don't linger as long with non-artist).
4. trying something new, a new painting surface, a new medium, a new brush, anything that forces me to change the way I work.
5. be silly, laugh out loud,
6. going through older work and finding a gem
7. playing with my dogs or horses, they always make me smile
8. family that supports even when they don't understand what I am doing
9. teaching others and sharing my artistic views on painting and design
10. SELLING my art!!!!! last but not least.

I am proud to show these two new works. It took a couple of painting weeks to find my desired effect with the open acrylics. I am pleased with the palette colors, which I matched to my favorite oil colors. My preference of substrates is a highly textured canvas. I am also working with the open acrylics on watercolor paper that I have added lots of texture.
Trying new products and switching mediums and substrates is a great way to expand your creativity. I can really say I am truly excited about it.

Golden Open Acrylics and Chroma Interactive Acrylics

I have been working with a new medium, the open/interactive acrylics. Both Golden and Chroma. They are both great products, and I can't say that I prefer one brand over the other.
The new open acrylics have extended working time, making it possible to handle more like oil paints.
Below are a couple of the paintings I finished in the last couple of weeks.

In this abstract, I handled the paint as I would have with oil paint. It worked well as long as I painted fairly quickly. This one was paint directly from the tube with no medium added.

This one I handed much more like I do with acrylics on watercolor paper. A little glazing, and then opaque added.

The open acrylics are quite versatile and adaptable to the way you choose to handle them.

Oil Painting Mediums

Found this article on oil painting mediums that might be helpful.

I had posted another, which charges fees for reprinting, so I have posted this one instead.

Have a look here at the main oil painting mediums and a brief description of what each one does.

Gesso Primer It may seem odd to start the oil painting mediums section with what is in fact an acrylic medium. However, it's widely used as a base coat for art canvasses when oil painting. Comments for gesso regarding acrylic paint mediums apply equally to oil painting mediums.

Turpentine The best known thinner and cleaner for oil paints and brushes. Use the distilled artists version rather than the household version for best finishes on your painting. Traditionally mixed 50/50 with linseed oil for an excellent medium. However, its powerful odor is not always welcome in the house and may be an irritant for some artists.

Low Odor Thinners An excellent substitute for turpentine, in all the areas mentioned above - without the smell!

Linseed Oil After turps, probably the best known of the oil painting mediums. On its own gives colors a high gloss. Added to colors it produces a glaze effect. Used 50/50 with turpentine or low odor thinners, it provides a good, general purpose paint medium for oil painting. Slows down drying time. Compared to some oils, it can go a little more yellow over a period of time.

White spirit A cheaper version of low odor thinners and turps. Ok for thinning paints for underpainting, but probably not for quality work. Fine for cleaning brushes.

Prepared Oil Painting Mediums Varying from one manufacturer to another, a combination of white spirit and other oils to provide a ready-mixed, user-friendly paint diluent. A beginner could use this, instead of mixing their own combination of oils and other additives.

Stand Oil A faster-drying version of linseed oil. Reduces consistency of paint and brush marks.

Poppy Oil For adding to lighter colors and white. Less inclined to yellow than linseed oil. However slower drying.

Gold size Although primarily intended for applying gold leaf, it provides a relatively fast drying oil-based paint medium.

Alkyd Gel & Liquid Oil Painting Mediums Alkyd oil paints are well known for their much faster drying properties than regular oil colors. Alkyd paint mediums can be added to conventional oil paints to speed drying time by up to 50%. Can also be used as a glazing medium. Like acrylics, the glazing technique is where a translucent color is painted over another, dry color. The lower one glows through but is affected by the density of the top glaze. Creating misty or smoky backgrounds is a good example of a glaze.

White Alkyd Paint Strictly speaking, this isn't a paint medium, but I use this a lot to speed the drying of conventional oils where I want a lighter tint or a highlight, as opposed to a glaze. The white alkyd paint, when mixed with other colors, acts in the same way as the alkyd gel, but doesn't lose the opacity of the color.

Gloss or Matt Picture Varnish A spirit based varnish, equally at home on acrylics as well as oils. Dries to a gloss finish and will not yellow or bloom. Gloss and matt varnishes can be mixed to give a satin finish. Can be removed with turpentine or white spirit.

Retouching Varnish A thin varnish which can be painted over a touch-dry painting to 'lift' areas where the oil has sunk into the canvas, leaving dull spots. Can also be used as a temporary varnish, say for exhibitions, where thicker paint on a recently completed painting may take many months to dry through completely. Can be removed prior to, or left on underneath, the final varnish coat.

Damar Varnish Dries in a few hours with a satin - medium gloss. Removable.

So there we are. If you've read this far, it'll be obvious already that several oil painting mediums do fairly similar things.

Probably the best ones to start with are Low Odor Thinners, one of the mixing oils such as Linseed oil and one of the other additives that promote quicker drying.

Then as you become used to them, try out the other oil painting mediums one by one. This way minimises confusion over what to use and when and stops you wasting your money.

Here are a few of the oil paintings I have have done this week. The first one is actually a rework of one I did about a year ago. I liked it, but it did not have the unity it needed. I really like it now. The other two are studies from this week.
In my next post I will show what I have done with the open acrylics. The more I do the more ideas come to me.

Why Don't I Choose One Medium and Stay With It?

I have been painting for over 35 years now, and I have still not settled on the medium that I love the most. I first began with oil paints, that is until I watched a watercolor demo at the local art league. I went out immediately and purchased a small set of watercolors. I think it might have even been a child's set at that time. Later of course I learned you must have good materials to paint good paintings.

For years I bounced from oil to watercolor depending on what workshop or demo I attended. I begin with dark shapes and work toward lights. This is probably most naturally suited for oil painting. I struggled for years with wet into wet watercolors. However, I never could seem to save the lights, as the traditional water colorist.

At some point in all this bouncing from oil to watercolor, I also must have seen a pastel demo. Because I found myself picking up the pastel sticks and painting portraits. I quickly found that pastel was a great medium for me. I could begin with the dark shapes and build up to the lights and push and pull the surface with a play of cool and warm colors. I like the very direct application in pastel . I paint with small pieces and broad swipes with the side of a pastel stick, almost as if drawing and painting at the same time. I like the feeling of color flowing from my fingers. A love of drawing was quickly developed as I studied contour and gesture drawings.

This brings me up to a time of my life when I suffered a serious artist block. I continued to try to paint, but the spirit wasn't with me. When I slowly began to just allow myself to play with paint and color, I picked up watercolor again. I believe this was a way to deal with my emotions and the changes in my life that had devastated me so intensely. The work I have been producing the past five or six years is the result of this spirit freeing play with colors and design. I am proud of the work and I think it shows a real metamorphosis as I re-emerged from that horrid artist block.

Here we are in the present. And I have been studying sculpting the figure and portrait in clay for a year or two now. Bringing back to the surface that love of drawing and the desire to explore again those mediums I have loved in the past.
So tell me, why don't I choose one medium and stay with it?

These three paintings were the result of a Facebook comment I made on Jan Blencowe's video she had posted on her Facebook. I thought her palette she showed looked like a wonderful abstract painting. When I mentioned there, that I might try using the limited triad, the challenge/paintoff was begun.
It was great fun and a wonderful exercise in trying something new.
This was quite a shift in my work, since I usually start with three transparent and staining colors and then begin to glaze and layer with complementary colors.
This time I had to find new colors within the mixture of the triad. The greatest challenge to me using this particular triad was they were not all transparent and staining colors. The three colors used were yellow ochre, french blue and transparent red oxide. As you will see with Jan's, this is a wonderful triad for landscape painting.
I didn't stop with one. The way I work is to begin with a really wet paper and saturate it with colors. Since it takes a day to dry, I was impatient and began three.
I really like how all three of them turned out. Each person that has seen them, has picked a different favorite.
In a few days, I will post some photos of Jan's and another artist that painted the challenge.
I plan to try out different colors using a limited palette. Thinking of using magenta, cyan, and yellow. I think that will give beautiful floral colors.

Title for Painting

I really enjoyed hearing the comments to my suggestions for title of the painting I posted.
There seemed to be a common thread from everyone about it relating a feeling of water, a sea, a river, a harbor, a marketplace.
It was inspiring and confirming to find that each person related to it with their own beliefs and experiences.

I haven't added to much more to the painting at this point. I continued to apply opaques to repeat shapes that were already there. The use of the warmer and lighter colors helps to move the eye across the surface. I tried to establish of a feeling of trees and water and a little light creeping in. Deep in the Woods might be a title for it.

At this point, I am finished. However, I will place it in a mat board and prop it up where I can glance at it now and then. It may change again, or I may decide that I am still happy with it.

The blogosphere is such a cool place. Where else can you meet so many interesting people doing so many cool things in so many different places? And all without leaving your favorite coffeehouse!
Someone somewhere in blogdom started a fun practice to help bloggers learn a little bit more about each other. One current version works like this: when “tagged” write a post containing five to seven (hopefully) interesting things people probably didn’t know about you, then “tag” five to seven bloggers to have them do the same. A simple, fun and entertaining way to learn about people.

So here are few things about me that you might not know.

I live on a small acreage farm with my husband, Mike. We have been married for 10 years. I have three children from another marriage of 30 years. I have three grandchildren that I adore.We have two horses, Gypsy and Doc, and two dogs, Mack and Louie.

For the past twenty five years I have been in the beauty industry. It was a great job that provided me the flexible time to devote to my art training and career. I was able to travel when I wanted and time off when ever I wanted. Although I have worked in a few more jobs, the salon was a perfect balance of time and creativity.

I have just begun studying sculpture. I would love to learn to throw pots.

If I could live anywhere I wanted, it would be in the Southwest.

On writing and rewriting my artist statement.

I have spent the weekend writing and rewriting. I expect it will continue to change. Here it is as it stands now.

I am an expressionist painter using color and line as my language. I believe there is a strong human response to color and it reflects and affects our moods. A painting begins with a broad wash of color and rhythms. By adding layers of transparent washes, I establish a strong design structure and color harmony. Each layer reveals more forms and shapes. The use of lines and textures add intrigue and interest to the surface. At some point I may begin to sense metaphoric or figurative elements in the painting. However, my intention is to keep the elements universal and invite the viewer to experience it on an emotional level as well as visually. Even when I make a choice to use a subject such as a still life, landscape or figure, the elements of form, line, color and texture are my focus. I love the delicacy, vigor and beauty in them apart from the subject.

Developing an abstract landscape

After the initial wash was applied, I mask off areas to keep light and began to layer washes of dark greens and blue over the surface. Additional textures were applied by placing papers on top and spraying lightly with water. I also used a razor blade to lightly repeat lines and shapes that were formed. When dried the masking tape was removed.

On this step, I began by laying in more dark and rich washes, again repeating some of the shapes that were established. More textures were applied in the same manner, being careful not to overdo. Then I mixed up a mid value using the darks I had already used by mixing them with gesso. I like gesso because it gives nice coverage without getting shinny on the surface.

I am not finished with it yet, I will continue to take photos as I work. It may not need much more to be finished or it may become totally different. Can't wait to see.
I'll be giving a workshop March 4 and 5 using these same techniques as well as watermedia collage on paper.

Here is the first in a series of small floral studies. I am not sure if I will always be painting in oil, maybe sometimes it will be watercolor or pastel. I have set aside an hour a day for this exercise in color and form. I have also set aside an hour for drawing.

Photography Class

Here are some photos from my second photography class.

I signed up for this photography class to learn how to take better photos of my artwork. I learned that and so much more. Now I fear I have fallen in love with photography also. Another medium to add to my list.
Some artist recommend that you stick with one medium and master it.
I see validity in that recommendation, especially when first learning your craft. I use the word craft, because I am referring to the technical side of the work. You must learn the craft before you can express your artist self. That being said, I firmly believe the longer you work, the more you expand your experiences and techniques and even your mediums, the more free you are to express yourself. I have found through my 30 plus years of art, that learning or trying a new medium expands and enhances all my work. I encourage all artist to step out of their comfort zone and try new mediums.

Just looking at this makes me think of a warm summer afternoon, sitting out on the patio after a delightful lunch with my friends. The only thing really missing in this picture is the bottle of wine we would be sharing.

I painted this about a year ago. My friend Madalyn Kennedy was visting for a week in my home and studio and we were enjoying the chance to paint together. We had once lived in Longview and now she lives in Houston and I live in East Texas. I decided to attempt getting a similar look with oil paint as I do with the watercolor. So I have had this hanging around the studio for a while to decide if it was a keeper. Finally I posted it to my website.
My granddaughter titled it You turn my world upside down, and that really seems to describe the feeling in this painting. Sometimes I feel that Stop the World I Want Off, would also be a great title. The busier my life gets the more I feel that way. Life is busy for me now and I do love it and feel very blessed. However, finding a balance and time alone in the studio is crucial to the creative process. I try to be in the studio some each day, but I have now set aside Thursday's for my studio day, a day that I will accept no other appointments, I will let the answering machine take my calls, and even if I just sit and read or meditate, I will be alone with the creative spirit.

This has been a very busy week and I have been out of the studio more than in. Thursday I took a photography workshop and I am posting some of the assignment shots. It was a beautiful day to go out and shoot. We were in historic Mineola, Texas by the railroad depot.

I enjoyed it so much, I signed up for a more advanced workshop in two weeks. I am hoping that we will have the same kind of beautiful weather, but we may be shooting indoors.
One of the most helpful things I learned in the workshop was how to use the fill flash for back lite shots. I really hate using flash at all, but in this case it makes such a difference. I also learned my camera has a mode called manner/museum and is preset to take photos where flash and sound are not appropriate. Any of you photographers will see, I really needed this class and much more. I recommend a digital camera class to everyone who owns a digital camera.
I downloaded Picasa3 on my computer and I am finding it very easy to work with and it has made downloading from my camera very easy. I uploaded these pictures directly from my picasa to my blog saving a lot of steps.

I'll be at a sculpting workshop this next week and then the next Monday I will be giving a watermedia demo. I have been taking step by step photos for an example and I will have to have a few taken to different degrees of completion to show how I work. I will only have about two hours and I don't want to spend time allowing layers of paint to dry.

I have been in the studio today catching up on imaging works that have been completed in the last few months. I have finally developed a plan for a permanent photo box. My husband Mike will be so happy with me. He just loves to get the saws out to build something else for me. I have been using a foam board covered in black fabric to pin my work to and then set up lights from each direction. I am asking him to build me a box with the back of it cover in cork painted black. I want it set up in the corner of my studio so it will always be ready to shoot.
My aim here is to shoot as I go, instead of having to clear off space to set up and shoot 15 paintings. Now to find a corner I can clear out permanently. That is the challenge.

Thanks to Mike and Archie the members of MLOTA sculpting guild have 10 new sculpting stands. Don't they look great. We are so proud to have them.

I will be giving a watermedia and collage demo and a workshop for MLOTA this month.
Just had a brain storm this morning that I should also give a into class on artist blogging. It has come to my attention that a lot of artist or afraid of the internet. I thought I could take some of the mystery away for them.
Not that I am any expert, but new to it also, should help to show how easy it is to get started.

In place of a list of resolutions of things I want to accomplish in this new year, I have only one. This one thing alone would take care of all things I need in my life. If I wish for a list of things and keep my mind focused on them, I will probably see them manifest in my life. Or at least that is what we are all told. And I do believe this. But what if I am missing something. Maybe there is something waiting to come to me that I haven't yet dreamed of. So my one resolution this year is to be open. Open my heart, and mind to the will of the Divine, so I may receive in abundance all gifts that are given to me.

This 8x10 painting was inspired by the photo I posted a few days ago. It has been a while since I painted with oil. The luscious pinks, oranges, and yellow sunrises are a common site at my place. This overlooks our back pasture and you can barely see the pond beyond the hill. Frequently there is a mist rising off the pond and the bottom land. One of the reasons I love living here.

The image at the left is a small pastel (7x11) on Wallis pastel paper. I first applied a watercolor wash on the paper and let it dry and finished with pastel. The title of the painting is Mission.

I spent the entire day at the local league of arts. We tackled a huge project of making 10 sculpting stands for the sculpting guild. Thank God for husbands with carpentry skills. We got 6 stands almost build. But those stands are going to be wonderful.

Tomorrow I am locking the door and not answering the phone. I am spending the day alone in the studio.

Sunrises

I love beautiful skies, sunrises, and sunsets.

This is not from today, but from my back yard a few months back.
I think this will be my next painting.
I have not been able to be in the studio the last couple of days, because of a cold that has my eyes and head spinning. Hopefully today will be better.
However, it has given me the opportunity to start up this blog and twitter. Still being creative.
Taking time today to lay out some plans for new works and to plan out a demo I am giving for Mineola League of the Arts, www.mlota.org, in Mineola, Texas .

Work for the New Year

For the past couple of years, I have been painting in a free and exciting way using color and design as my subject. These works have been fun, and have been accepted in many exhibits. I have been and still am giving some workshops in this technique, with the emphasis on learning how to paint a good abstract design.
My first love in art was with the portrait and figure, both people and animals. That is surfacing again, as I have been studying sculpture for the past year. I believe my work will take a new direction this year. It will be so exciting to see what comes from the combination of this colorful and exhilarating style and the gesture and expression of people and animals.
